The parliamentary elections of April 5, 2009 must be a lesson for the society, says the Civic Coalition for Free and Fair Elections. One year after the elections, the Coalition urges the authorities, the political class and the whole society to create a favorable environment for holding free and fair elections, which are an essential condition in democratizing the country. The appeal is made in connection with the probability of new legislative elections in the near future, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Coalition approves of authorities' efforts aimed at improving the electoral legislation and their stated aims to create conditions for holding free, fair and democratic elections in Moldova. It calls on the authorities and the political forces to analyze the correctness of the April 5, 2009 elections, including the cases of violation of the electoral legislation, to draw conclusions and present them to the society in a transparent manner. As to the possible future elections, the Coalition asks the Parliament and the Government to take effective steps to prevent and avoid irregularities similar to those identified by the Coalition in the election campaigns of 2009. The Coalition recommends compiling the electoral rolls accurately and transparently, ensuring a favorable social environment so that all the electoral opponents can present their platforms, creating working conditions for the mass media and freeing them from political interference, creating voting conditions for all the people, etc. The Coalition recommends the parliamentary parties to more efficiently communicate with the society about the political and/or electoral processes expected in the near future so as to diminish the social frustrations caused by the unstable political situation.
