In Moldova civic activism is poorly developed, while the people are either indifferent or do not know how to defend their rights. Such conclusions were formulated in the talk show “Politics” on TV 7 channel, IPN reports.

Psychologist Daniela Terzi-Barbarosie said the lack of civic engagement is due to the lack of relevant education. “We cannot say that the Moldovans are cowards, but we do not have a tradition of civic activism. This tradition must be formed, while the growing generations should be educated in this style. The historical conditions didn’t allow the people from our country to develop civic activism. They were handcuffed for such activities,” she stated.

Civic activist Vitalie Sprinceana considers there is no culture of civic activism in Moldova. “The Moldovans protest or often do not know what they protest for and how they can achieve their goals. They promote an idea and ultimately shift to another one,” he stated.

Activist Oleg Brega said a low number of people take part in protests. “I have protested for 12 years. I try to persuade the people to protest and to demand rights. Let’s take today’s event. We mounted a protest in support of Sergiu Voloc, but he didn’t come to the protest. The people in our country do not have the culture of polemic and critical thinking,” he stated.

Antonita Fonari, deputy head of the National Participation Council, considers civic engagement should be promoted by opinion leaders, trade unionists and representatives of churches. “It was proven that things can be changed by protests. It depends on what we want and how we demand this change,” she said.
