City Hall refused to authorize billboard depicting gay couple

The Chisinau City Hall and the Antidiscrimination Coalition are involved in a litigation because of a billboard that the City Hall refused to authorize for placement in Chisinau and throughout the country. The Coalition’s spokesperson Mariana Galescu told reporters that she knew from unofficial sources that the billboard wasn’t approved because among other human figures depicted on the cartoony billboard, there were two of the same sex holding hands, Info-Prim Neo reports. Mariana Galescu said that at the end of last year, the Antidiscrimination Coalition designed a billboard to promote the Antidiscrimination Hotline 0 8003 8003 and found a partner agency that agreed to place them for free throughout the country. Before their placement, the billboards needed the approval for social advertisement from the City Hall’s division or architecture and urbanism. The billboard shows several categories of discriminated people, including a Roma man, a person in a wheelchair and a gay couple among others. According to the press officer, the City Hall refused to approve the social ad. Afterwards, an ad-hoc meeting was organized at the City Hall with a Roma organization and the Motivation association. “The Roma organization is a pocket organization of the City Hall because it is represented by a single person”, claims Mariana Galescu. At the meeting it was decided not to approve the billboard, arguing that it divided society into social groups and some of the images were degrading. “Unofficially, we were told that they didn’t like two men holding hands”, said the Coalition’s spokesperson. As a result, the Antidiscrimination Coalitions sued the City Hall, but the court rejected the action. Recently, the court decision was appealed at the Supreme Court of Justice, announced Mariana Galescu. The Antidiscrimination Coalitions launched the Antidiscrimination Hotline to offer counseling and free legal assistance to victims of discrimination. The number 0 8003 8003 can be called free and confidentially from any public or fixed telephone in Moldova, Monday to Friday, between 9 AM and 6 PM.
