City Council finally elects its Chair

Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu has been elected today as Chairman of the Chisinau City Council (CMC). His candidacy was backed by 27 councillors: 6 from the Moldova Noastra Alliance group, 3 from the Liberal-Democrat faction, 5 from the Social-Democrat group, and 11 from the Liberal Party. Two other votes came from National-Liberal Mihai Severovan and Democrat Oazu Nantoi. The Christian-Democrat People’s Party didn’t cast votes, the Communist Party didn’t vote for the candidate, 2 councillors representing the Humanist Party abstained, and Valery Klimenko, councillor representing the Social-Political Movement Ravnopravie, voted against. . By joining the majority coalition, the Social-Democrat group, formed by the councillors of the Social-Democrat Party and of the Social Democracy Party, has finally broken the deadlock in the Council. Mihai Gimpu has stood as candidate for CMC Chair before, but his candidacy wasn’t then put up to a vote because of some arguments inside the majority coalition.
