The Chisinau Local Administration should collect taxes for all types of parking lots, especially for those placed in the central zone of the City, says Oleg Ponomarenco, specialist responsible for the coordination and supervision of the activity of the parking lots on the territory of the Municipality of Chisinau. According to the cited source, the international practice proves that in the majority of the European countries the local administrations support policies meant to determine the residents to give up cars in favour of public transport. In many cases the “determination” method are interdictions, accepted by everybody, or high taxes which are accepted by the persons who indeed need to travel by car. “Of course, Chisinau can not be compared with European cities in terms of size, infrastructure or financial possibilities. However, we should acknowledge that a large freedom offered to the drivers is detrimental to pedestrians. Regretfully, the number of accidents is also increasing”, the specialist says. The Public Transport Department supports the initiative of the Mayor to move as far as possible the kerbs and to create “pocket” type parking lots. But this project is not a solution for vehicle’s stationing. The number of “pocket” parking lots should be limited and coordinated with the Road Police in order to avoid accidents, the cited source considers.
