The mayoral runoffs are held in Chisinau municipality today, June 3. The competition for mayoralty involves the Party of Socialists’ candidate Ion Ceban and the candidate of the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” Andrei Nastase. Polling places work from 7am until 9pm, IPN reports.
A number of 634 547 ballots were printed for the runoffs. Of these, 408 080 are in the Romanian language. There is no minimum turnout of voters required for the runoff vote. The candidate who gains the largest number of votes emerges victorious.
The voters must go to the polling place with the identity card and the accompanying loose leaf where there is indicated the domicile or residence. Those whose identity card is invalid can apply for a temporary card at the local offices of the Public Services Agency in Chisinau that work from 7am until 9pm on June 3.
Those who, for health reasons or on other grounds, cannot go to the polling place can vote at the place of stay. On the election day, applications for voting by the mobile ballot box can be submitted by 3pm in written form, but these must be accompanied by a medical certificate.
The voting process is overseen by national observers assigned by Promo-LEX Association to monitor each of the polling places and by international observers.
In the first round of the early mayoral elections on May 20, the voter turnout in Chisinau was 35.53%, which is over 225,000 voters cast their ballots. None of the candidates polled 50%+1 vote to be declared winner. The first two candidates with the largest score went through to the runoffs.
The elected mayor will hold office for a year, until the local general mayoral elections of 2019.
