Citizens from abroad will be able to vote with expired passports

Parliament decided to cancel the mixed electoral system and return to the proportional one. The bill, passed in the second reading, provides for the reduction of the electoral threshold for both parties and electoral blocs. Integrity certificates will also be removed, IPN reports.

According to the approved modifications, for a party the minimum representation threshold will constitute 5% instead of 6% at present. For an electoral bloc it will be lowered from 9% to 7%. For an independent candidate the electoral threshold will remain at 2%.

The integrity certificates are replaced by declarations on oath regarding the absence of any legal or judicial restrictions to run for or hold public office.

Parliament has also reintroduced the rule prohibiting electoral campaigning on election day and the day before. This provision does not refer to information that has already been posted on the internet or on posters previously displayed.

The Moldovan citizens from abroad will be able to vote using passports, identity cards and military cards in parliamentary and presidential elections and national referenda. It will be possible to vote with expired passports as well.

The amendments were passed by the vote of 57 MPs. Today marks the last day before Parliament adjourns for summer recess, and at the proposal of Speaker Zinaida Greceanîi, the bill will be passed in final reading in an extraordinary session of the legislative.
