CIS surpasses state of “fever” – President
The Minsk Summit proved that the predicted “funeral” of the Commonwealth of Independent States did not take place, and, in spite of all kinds of forecasts and scenarios, it still has a rather good potential for solving different bilateral problems, President of the R. of Moldova, Vladimir Voronin, stated at a briefing organized in Chisinau, in which journalists where invited selectively.
According to the Presidency’s press release, Voronin declared at the briefing that CIS passed through a “fever” period, followed by an absolutely new stage of development.
Vladimir Voronin specified that in CIS, all the issues, without exception, are being discussed in a very honest atmosphere. “The summit resembles no more to a dumb funeral team, nostalgic for old times. Today, CIS focuses on the future”, head of state said.
A report has been presented at the summit concerning the increase of the CIS efficiency. According to the decisions made on the basis of this report, till June 2, 2007, proposals of CIS member-states on reforming the organizations are to be gathered and synthesized. The issue is to be debated within the frameworks of the CIS summit in Dushanbe. “Honesty, trust and strategic partnership lay at the basis of our relations” concluded Voronin, specifying that the support of the idea of maintaining and reforming the organization represents the expression of a pragmatic approach and does not contravene the European integration option of the R. of Moldova.
Previously, at the end of the GUAM heads of state meeting, in May 2006, President Vladimir Voronin told a press conference, held in Kiev, that the R. of Moldova examines options for exiting CIS. In his speech at the GUAM meeting, the Moldovan president expressed his regret that “CIS didn’t take advantage of its huge internal potential”, mentioning that earlier, he repeatedly proposed that the “CIS is reformed on the basis of the European Union standards”.
A bill on Moldova’s exiting CIS proposed by “Moldova Noastra” Alliance parliamentary faction in late March has been rejected by the communist faction.
