Churches officiate the hours tomorrow evening

The Orthodox Christians on January 7 celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ or Christmas according to the old calendar. On the eve and on Christmas, when it is remembered the birth of the Savior by Virgin Mary and the bringing of the first gifts by the magi, a series of special services are held, IPN reports.

In the eve of the feast, churches officiate the hours, followed by the Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great, the vespers, the vigil, the matins and the Nativity Liturgy. In some churches, the liturgy is officiated at night, like on Easter, while in others it is held in the morning. The chants are also special. They praise and glorify the Birth of Jesus Christ and, of course, carols are part of the service. Afterwards, groups of carolers go from home to home to share the holiday spirit.

The Christians who fasted before Christmas can receive the Eucharist and are allowed to eat anything The traditional Christmas meal includes pound cake, mincemeat rolls in cabbage or vine leaves, meat jelly, pork sausages and ring-like braided bread. Until Epiphany, the Orthodox Christian keep fasting on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

On January 8, it is observed the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, while on January 9 – the Feast of Saint Apostle and First Martyr Stephen.
