Chisinau’s 2007 road toll figures: over 1,500 injured, 96 killed
In 2007, more than 1,500 persons were injured and other 96 killed in accidents on Chisinau’s roads, the Traffic Police said in its annual road accident report.
Chisinau Traffic Police Inspector Ion Roscovanu told Info-Prim Neo that the main causes of car accidents were jaywalking, ignoring of priority rules on the road, inattention, speeding, and drunk-driving.
According to the report, last year there were registered 1,195 serious accidents, a 1% decrease on the previous year. At the same time, the number of fatalities rose by 6%.
Most accidents, 290 in number, with 30 casualties and 344 injured, occurred in Chisinau’s Rascani district. Buiucani comes next with 269 accidents, which claimed 26 lives and injured 341 persons, followed by Centru – 247 accidents (11 killed, 324 injured), Botanica – 239 (20 killed, 283 injured), and Ciocana – 150 (9 killed, 212 injured).
Statistics show that accidents involving pedestrians account for the most of the total – 667. The next are: vehicle-to-vehicle collisions (383 accidents); vehicle collisions against obstacles (76), accidents involving bicyclists (16), etc.
