The body of a newborn baby in a plastic bag was found in a dumpster in central Chisinau. The police shortly arrested the suspected mother, a resident of the city.
The woman, 28, was held at the Chisinau Airport as she was trying to flee the country. During subsequent questioning by the police, she allegedly confessed.
A criminal case has been started to establish the exact circumstances and motive.
In Moldova, neonaticide, or the killing of a newborn within the first 24 hours of birth by a mother in a state of mental distress, is punishable by up to 5 years in jail.
