The unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic of Azerbaijan officially ceased to exist on January 1, 2024, IPN reports, with reference to “Evropeiskaya Pravda” in Kiev.
The dissolution of the pseudo-state entity, created on the basis of the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast as part of Soviet Azerbaijan, took place in accordance with last September’s order of the then quasi-president of the unrecognized republic, Samvel Shahramanyan.
Shahramanyan ordered to dissolve all government institutions by January 1, 2024 - from this day, the self-proclaimed republic officially ceases to exist, the decree said.
The document followed a lightning-fast one-day military operation by Azerbaijani military forces launched on September 19, after which Azerbaijan retook control of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Although Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev vowed to guarantee the rights and safety of ethnic Armenians after decades of mistrust, war, mutual hatred and violence, the promise failed to impress many Nagorno-Karabakh residents, leaving them skeptical of the possibility of peaceful reintegration of the region.
As a result, more than 100,000 ethnic Armenians left Karabakh for Armenia, the quoted source said.
IPN reminds that among the conflicts generated by Moscow’s effort to stop the collapse of the USSR is the one that materialized in the presence of an illegal regime in Tiraspol. In the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine, Kiev directly proposed assistance in liquidating the pro-Russian enclave by military ways, Chisinau further pleading for the peaceful reintegration of the districts located on the left bank of the Nistru.
