Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca has ordered a new concept of beautification and greening for the capital city. Besides, the Green Space Management Association is to make a citywide census of street trees and shrubs, including those deemed hazardous, and estimate the number of trees to be planted in the years to come, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Association’s director Eliferii Haruta has told a City Hall meeting on Monday that Chisinau’s arborists are working intensely, and the report on the situation of the city’s green spaces will be finalized within 2 or 3 months. He also said new trees ought to be planted at least twice a year, in the fall and spring. The Mayor expressed his dissatisfaction with the fact that only 22,000 trees were planted this spring, compared to 46,000 pieces last year. Haruta said in reply that the areas which could accommodate new trees have started shrinking. While the initial intention was to plant a larger number of trees on soil exposed to erosion, it has been found that efforts to fight erosion and landslides are needed in the first place, Haruta explained. Dorin Chirtoaca also sought a solution to the establishment of a square dedicated to Europe. According to Chisinau’s chief arborist, no answer has come from the Parliament so far. It was supposed that the square would be established in Chisinau, either at the entrance to Stefan cel Mare Public Garden or in the place of an old square in Botanica district. This week the municipal arborists will continue to brace green spaces and prepare leisure zones for the summer season. More than 11,000 trees were planted on Saturday, April 12, in Chisinau as part of the National Greening Day “A Tree for Our Eternity”. Other 10,000 trees and 10,000 roses were planted over the last week. The costs of the greening campaign were covered by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and the City Council, which allocated 250,000 and 100,000 lei, respectively, for this purpose.
