Chisinau to name street honouring actor Constantin Constantinov
City officials in Chisinau intend to honour the late actor Constantin Constantinov by naming a new street in Rascani district after him and by fixing a memorial tablet on the facade of the actor’s house on Sciusev Street.
The municipality is thus satisfying an earlier request made by the Theatre Union of Moldova, which had asked the Chisinau City Hall to name a street “Uncle Costache”, as the close friends of the late artist dubbed him. In October 2006, the City Council rejected the proposal to change the name of Teatrului Street to Constantin Constantinov. The councillors argued the move would create a detrimental precedent of changing street names in Chisinau.
A popular theatre and movie actor, Constantin Constantinov was born on 7 July 1915 in Sucleea village, Slobozia district. He graduated from the Odessa Theatre School and played on the sage of Pushkin Theatre in Chisinau (currently the National Theatre Mihai Eminescu). In 1953 he was awarded the title of people’s artist. Besides his more than 100 parts in theatre plays, Constantinov also played in nearly 50 movies, mostly comedies. He died on 8 March 2003 and was buried at the cemetery on Armenesca Street.
