Chisinau suburbs could expand to meet the demand for housing

The suburban settlements of the municipality of Chisinau which ran out of land for home constructions could expand their area in the future if this fact is financially and socially grounded. The head of the Finance Department of the Chisinau Municipal Council, Nicolae Craciun, made this suggestion to the mayors of the suburban settlements of Chisinau, which warned about the shortage of lands for constructions inside the villages and, at the same time, about the high number of demands for housing. Craciun says that after the approval of the General Urban Plan and of the Plan for territorial refitting of the municipality of Chisinau, the local mayoralties can start to work out the local refitting plans. In this respect, he mentioned that the UN Development Programme (UNDP) in Moldova is willing to provide financial assistance to the settlements to work out the refitting plans and that the mayors should display more initiative. Mayor of Gratiesti commune Valentina Patras says that in these settlements the lands from the 5% state reserve were long ago depleted, although there are 600 requests for the construction of homes. According to her, a possibility would be allotting the lands to the young families in the gardens near their parents’ home, if this fact would be allowed by the authorities. The shortage of lands for constructions is typical for several suburban settlements, including Cruzesti, Truseni, Colonita, Ghidighici. Several mayoralties, although have several reserve hectares do not know how to distribute the lands because of the high number of persons requesting lands. Some suburban mayors say that a solution for that is to transform agricultural lands outside the settlements into lands for construction.
