Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Eugen Carpov has launched the proposal at a meeting in Tiraspol on Wednesday of a common platform for interaction on economic issues. “We consider the creation of a common economic space on both sides on the Nistru an important part of the settlement process”, stated Carpov after the meeting with Tiraspol's chief negotiator Nina Shtanski, which was hosted by the OSCE Mission's Head. According to a press release from the Reintegration Bureau, the chief negotiators highlighted the importance and benefits of economic rapprochement for both the business community and the population on the two sides of the Nistru. Among the issues discussed were also the problem related to the license plates, the situation of the Latin-script schools, and the creation of a subgroup for human rights. Eugen Carpov was accompanied at the meeting by Deputy Economy Minister Octavian Calmic. “Moldova is connected to a host of international economic processes, and in our relations with the European Union we are advancing towards a new stage of economic cooperation due to the reforms implemented by our country on the path of European integration”, stated Octavian Calmic. At the meeting in Tiraspol, it was agreed to hold a meeting of the subgroup for banking affairs, which was recently created within the economic work group. Banking experts are expected to identify priorities and develop an action plan to facilitate the activity of businesses and banks in the Transnistrian region. According to Novi Region agency, Nina Shtanski stated after the meeting with Eugen Carpov that ensuring the freedom of movement of road and railway movement was not enough, and that the same understandings should be also reached as regards naval and aircraft movement. Concerning the issue related to the broadcasting of a number of Chisinau-based TV channels in Transnistria, Shtanski voiced the concern that they could interfere with the signals of the Russian and Ukrainian channels. In a press release, Ambassador Jennifer Brush, the head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova, welcomed the regular meetings of the chief negotiators to discuss outstanding issues. “Taking into account the frequency of the meetings between both sides, I am personally convinced of their commitment to finding a solution to these issues,” said Brush after the meeting with Shtanski and Carpov. While she was in Tiraspol, Brush also visited Vitaliy Eriomenco, a businessman from Moldova detained in Tiraspol who complains of serious health issues. Brush called on the Transnistrian authorities to ensure the protection of human rights, and said that the OSCE Mission would continue monitoring his case.
