Chisinau Police declare war on jaywalking
Traffic Police are cracking down on jaywalking on Chisinau streets. Each day police officers fine dozens of persons who, by crossing the street in a reckless manner, are likely to cause serious road accidents.
Ion Roscovanu, Road Safety Inspector of the Chisinau Traffic Police, told Info-Prim Neo that the police have conducted in the capital city a week-long operation dubbed “The Pedestrian”, during which traffic agents paid increased attention to how pedestrians behave. On Thursday alone, traffic agents stopped and fined 32 pedestrians who were trying to cross the street in interdicted places.
Despite numerous road traffic education programmes aimed at explaining pedestrians the danger to which they expose themselves by practicing jaywalking, they remain undisciplined. Jaywalking accounts for most of the traffic accidents occurred in the capital. On Thursday, 31 January, a 44-year-old woman was hit by a Volkswagen vehicle on Mircea cel Batran Blvd after she stepped into the street without paying attention to the approaching car. The woman was admitted to hospital with multiple injuries.
On Thursday, 31 January, traffic agents registered numerous violations committed by motor vehicle drivers. 13 drivers were fined for drunk-driving, 133 for speeding, and 37 for not wearing seat belts.
