Trains on the Chisinau-Odessa route could be able to move through the Transnistrian region again starting from the middle of August, depending on how active Chisinau and Tiraspol engage in talks of technical nature, stated Victor Osipov, Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, at a news briefing on Monday, Info-Prim Neo reports. The deputy premier said the Moldovan Government has been waiting for some positive reactions in connection with the train movement issue, as well as with other issues, for two months now. At the end of last week, Vladimir Yastrebchak, Tiraspol's representative in the negotiations, told a news briefing the principles of the re-opening of the Chisinau-Odessa route had been practically coordinated, but the understandings between Chisinau and Tiraspol were not enough. According to him, the diesel train which circulated on the route until 2006 doesn't meet Ukraine's environmental requirements anymore. According to the Transnistrian press, the portion of the railway between Bender and Kuchurgan was examined by European experts, who concluded that there were no technical impediments for the resumption of train movement. Yet Yastrebchak was quoted as saying that there were still procedural issues that had to be settled, including customs and border guard procedures.
