Chisinau municipality set to eradicate unauthorized street vending

The practice of engaging in unauthorized selling in the streets of Chisinau will be removed using civilized ways, without resorting to repressive methods, says general mayor Dorin Chirtoaca. At a City Hall’s sitting on April 21, he instructed the subdivisions in charge and district offices to take further actions to combat street vending, Info-Prim Neo reports. The general mayor has underlined it is necessary to cease the street commerce, especially in foodstuff, as soon as possible. With summer approaching, there is an increased risk of foodstuff getting decayed. Dorin Chirtoaca has insisted on a civilized attitude towards the people selling in the street, especially addressing the municipal police. According to the mayor, the police shall take a constructive yet firm attitude. The best thing they should do is to escort and oblige the street vendors to go from streets to markets. The head of the trade department, Vladimir Nirca, has said every effort is being made to offer spaces in markets to those willing. Head of the Central Market Ion Stratulat says there are free spaces, including in the market he manages. The major problem of street merchants is that they do not have their merchandize tested.
