Chisinau Municipality grants 208 merit scholarships for 2008

On the City fay, 208 municipal scholarships were awarded by mayor Dorin Chirtoaca in Stefan cel Mare Public Garden. The Chisinau administration granted 8 scholarships more than in 2007, Info-Prim Neo reports. A scholarship is 1,000 lei and the candidates have been selected according to a special regulation. 110 scholarships have been granted to pupils, 33 to students of sport schools, 33 to arts schools, high school and colleges. At the same time, the laureates of Young Musicians Festival “Rosu, Galben, Albastru” have got 7 scholarships, while the winners in the World Delphic Games in Russia's Saratov got 3 scholarships. Elderly people with special merits in contributing to the development of education, science and culture got 22 scholarships. Dorin Chirtoaca said he was honored that Chisinau can be proud of such winners. “You are the ones who have made Chisinau famous and I urge you to go on like this, even better, so that all your colleagues should want to attain higher performances,” the mayor told the award-winners. The municipal scholarships have been granted since 1996 for the most gifted pupils and students from Chisinau. As of 1999, also elderly with merits benefit from municipal scholarships. For 10 years the scholarships were collected during a ball called “The Businessman of the Year”. Since 2006, the scholarships are paid from the local budget.
