Chisinau Municipal Council members endorse European integration referendum

A majority of 36 Chisinau municipal councilors on Tuesday formally expressed their common commitment to support the “yes” campaign at the October 20 referendum.

“We the members of the Municipal Council, by virtue of our responsibility to contribute to increasing the community’s standard of living, express our firm support and commitment to contribute to the accession process of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union. This national goal can only be achieved through solidarity and the common desire of all the political and social forces of the country, including the participation of the local public administration”, councilor Zinaida Popa (PAS) read out from the joint statement.

The statement also highlights the role of elected officials to promote the interests and solve the problems of local communities. “The European Union for decades has been a reliable partner of the country, providing selfless logistical and financial support. With the financial support of European countries and European partners, we renovated kindergartens and schools, repaired roads, modernized hospitals, paid compensations, restored objects of cultural heritage”, the document states.

MAN municipal councilor Corneliu Pîntea declared that the idea of European integration does not belong to a person or a political party, but, first of all, to the citizens, and therefore it must become a national idea. “We the politicians, first of all, have the role of persuading the citizens of the Republic of Moldova to choose the best option”, emphasized Corneliu Pîntea.

The statement was adopted in the absence of the Socialist group.
