There are no signs that would point to the possibility that an incident similar to the one that happened yesterday could repeat, stated Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca of Chisinau at a meeting of the municipal commission for emergencies on Thursday, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The fact that peaceful persons participating in the concert were hurt makes the incident a terrorist attack, Chirtoaca argued.
“The mayor's administration condemns the terrorist attack that happened in Chisinau on Wednesday night, October 14. We think it is beyond words to explain the behavior of those who planned, organized and committed this crime. We consider that it is a direct intimidation and threat to the population of Chisinau municipality as well as of the entire republic, an attempt to discourage freedom of behavior and of thought”, declared the mayor.
“If there are someone behind this crime we want to know names, what they want...”
“We urge the citizens to keep calm”, he added.
Iurie Crijanovski, a senior Chisinau police officer, said the incident on Wednesday night couldn't be prevented because of the great number of persons attending the celebrations, over 80,000. He said the police took standard safety measures, but the great number of participants prevented the police from identifying the attacker and arrest him before he set off the grenade.
