Chisinau mayor hopes for better cooperation with future Government

The mayor of Chisinau hopes that the municipal authorities will have a more constructive cooperation with the Government of Moldova. “The probability that we will have a democratic Government is very high,” Dorin Chirtoaca said at a news conferee where he presented the report on the second year of work as mayor, Info-Prim Neo reports. “We want to further solve the problems faced by the capital city with out own forces, but also with the support of the Government, which shouldn’t place obstacles as until present,” the mayor said. “The Government must finance the local authorities because it levies much more taxes. The central administration should invest in infrastructure and in balanced development, without discrimination on grounds of political orientation.” The mayor also said that after the new Parliament is constituted, he will put forward a number of amendments to laws that would guarantee the local autonomy. “It should be clear who must fix the taxes. The police should be decentralized and transferred under the municipal authorities,” Dorin Chirtoaca said. According to him, other state institutions should be also decentralized as they could be more efficient if working as part of the municipality. Asked if he regrets that the mayor of the capital is not an ex officio member of the Government anymore, Chirtoaca said that he was not, adding that the European standards do not envision this.
