Chisinau lyceum heads want Baccalaureate exams to be held

The managers of a number of lyceums of Chisinau said they are for holding Baccalaureate exams this year. Some of them admit that there are risks of infection with COVID-19 and some of the students could be unable to come to all the Baccalaureate exams, IPN reports.

“The Baccalaureate exams must be mandatory this year too. The students prepared for the Baccalaureate exams not during a year, but during at least 10-12 years,” said the director of “Mircea Eliade” Lyceum Grigore Vasilache. He noted that the students of their lyceum are ready to take the Baccalaureate exams. “For the students who want to continue their studies abroad, and these are not few, the Baccalaureate diploma is very important. We should take care not only of the lazy students, who do not want to study, but also of those who want to study and created all the conditions for the purpose,” said Grigore Vasilache, noting the Baccalaureate exams last year were annulled because there were a number of unknowns, including the vaccination.

The director noted that almost half of their lyceum’s teachers had COVID-19. A large part of those who didn’t contract the virus accepted to be immunized, while others wait to be vaccinated with Pfizer because the doctor recommended them so. Only five of their teachers refused to get a vaccine and these are young specialists. Grigore Vasilache admitted that some of the students could become infected with COVID-19 during the first exam and would be unable to take part in the next exams of the session.

Ala Leca, director of the Lyceum “Dante Alighieri”, said that last year a large part of their twelfth graders were dissatisfied with the annulment of the Baccalaureate exams. As a teacher, she considers the exams should be sat so that the students could show what knowledge they accumulated during the years of study. Among the 1,200 students and 100 teachers of the lyceum, cases of COVID-19 were recorded but the fugue the past two weeks declined given that 60% of their teachers got vaccinated.

“The Baccalaureate diplomas should be obtained by students based on exams, on the results of the years of study, not just like that,” said the acting director of “Gheorghe Asachi” Lyceum Nona Chiriac. She noted that they ensured all the conditions for the students of the eleventh and twelfth grades to attend classes at school and the graduates are prepared for exams. They hope the students after the Easter holidays will return to classes also because the COVID-19 infection rate at their lyceum wasn’t high.

“The Baccalaureate exams should be taken by all the candidates in equal conditions, while in the settlements where the students didn’t have smartphones or computers, the Agency for Assessment and Examination should take into account this aspect so that the students do not show dissatisfaction later,” said the principal of “Spiru Haret” Lyceum Victor Ambroci. He noted that those who will not take the Baccalaureate exams this year, practically do not have chances of continuing studies at international universities.

Victor Ambroci also said that 14 of their 68 teachers contracted COVID-19. Currently, 80% of the lyceum’s teachers got a vaccine against the novel coronavirus, with the first dose, and at the start of June they will be immunized with second dose.
