The central authorities of Moldova are to blame for what is going on in the autonomous unit of Gagauzia, former MP Alexandr Stoianoglo and deputy editor-in-chief of the weekly “Economicheskoe obozrenie” (“Economic review”) Dmitri Calac said in the talk show “Moldova live” on the public TV channel “Moldova 1”, IPN reports.

Alexandr Stoianoglo said there was never a constructive dialogue between the central public authorities and the Comrat authorities. Therefore, the autonomous unit became the most poorly developed region of Moldova. “Gagauzia is very poorly developed economically. This fact makes the population of the region more vulnerable. As a result, there appeared different radical forces and other illegal activities involving politicians from Comrat,” he stated.

The former lawmaker noted that the Government of Moldova does not devote the necessary attention to Gagauzia and sometimes even discriminates against the population of this region by evident disinterest. “It’s regrettable that none of the senior state officials attended the ceremonies held to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the proclamation of the Gagauz autonomous unit. Only Igor Corman was present at a conference. But it was an ideal occasion for the government to show that they care about the people of Gagauzia,” said Stoianoglo.

Dmitri Calac also made accusations against the authorities, naming them firefighters who intervene only in crisis situations. “The fact that some of the government officials travelled last year to Comrat for several times to deal with the conflicts there does not mean that the Moldovan authorities paid attention to Gagauzia. They went there only as ‘firefighters’ in order to calm things down. In fact, the Moldovan politicians detached themselves from the reality. They are generally not interested in the developments taking place in the country,” he stated.

He expressed his dissatisfaction with the fact that the representatives of the national minorities, including the people of Gagauzia, aren’t promoted to key posts in the central administration of Moldova. Host Oazu Nantoi denied yet Calac’s statements, saying there are representatives of ethnic minorities who hold state posts.
