Chisinau International Airport will be modernized starting with 2015

The Russian company “Avia Invest” presented a model showing the Chisinau airport after extension and modernization. The project will be initiated in 2015 and envisions the construction of a new terminal for passengers, development of the cargo terminal and construction of parking garages. The airport’s building will be also extended and the landing and takeoff strips will be widened by up to 60 meters, IPN reports.

“The company “Avia Invest” aims not only to develop the airport’s infrastructure, but also to improve the services provided for clients,” the company’s director general Boris Salov said when presenting the model.

The airport will be modernized in three stages. The first stage will start in 2015 and include the extension of the existing terminal. The construction of a new terminal will begin in 2025. Within the last stage, the existing territory will be extended and there will be built parking garages. The modernization project will last by 2035-2040.

The model was placed in the airport’s departure hall, where it can be seen by passengers.

The presentation organized by “Avia Invest” was interrupted by the leader of the Association for the Prevention and Combating of Economic Crime and Corruption Andrei Donica, who threw eggs at the model in protest at the Government’s decision to concede the airport. “They stole our airport, as the national stadium,” he stated. On December 9, the activist intends to give a news conference to present evidence showing that the concession documents were falsified.

“Avia Invest” won the concession contest and will manage the airport during 49 years. It pledged to invest almost €250 million in the development of the airport. After the expiration of the term, the airport will return under state administration.
