Chisinau has 37 honorary citizens

Thirty-seven remarkable people that contributed to the development of Chisinau have the title of honorary citizens of this city. “As a rule the title is awarded to people during their lifetime, but some received it posthumously as an exception, including singers Ion and Doina Aldea Teodorovici and poet Grigore Vieru”, Nina Stratulat, the head of the municipal department for social and humanitarian matters, told Info-Prim Neo. The holders of the title usually enjoy some privileges, like a 50% discount on utility bills and free rides in the municipal transportation system. “We proposed that they also should be paid welfare, especially those who need it so much; because most of the people who hold the title of honorary citizens are advanced in years and they do not always have enough resources for a decent living”, noted Nina Stratulat. Under the City Council rules, the title is conferred on candidates proposed by either the Mayor or at least two municipal councilmen. “When a candidate is proposed, a summary is required which describes the candidate's accomplishments. Then a special commission considers these accomplishments and decides whether to uphold the candidacy. Finally, the candidacy is considered by the City Council which awards the title”, said Nina Stratulat, adding that so far no candidate has been rejected, because only people whose accomplishments cannot be doubted are proposed. Among the honorary citizens of Chisinau are opera singer Maria Biesu, singer Anastasia Lazariuc, musician Nicolae Botgros, artist Glebus Sainciuc and others.
