Chișinău municipality’s General Directorate for Education, Youth, and Sports (DGETS) is examining the possibility to modify class attendance times, after a study has proven that, due to congested traffic, students are often late for class. At the same time, the authority points out that a move in the time classes begin will require a move in the time classes end, and students will be limited in their possibility to attend extracurricular activities, IPN reports.
The study was done across 145 institutions for primary, secondary, first and second cycle education in the municipality of Chișinău, which are collectively attended by over 80 thousand students. Due to congested traffic or other reasons, over three thousand students are regularly late for class, and five thousand arrive at school much earlier than classes begin. In 35 institutions classes start at 8.00, in 22 – at 08.15, in 83 – at 08.30, and singular institutions start classes at 08.20, 08.45, 09.00, or 10.00.
According to the study, in 111 institutions across Chișinău, with a total of 71.5 thousand students, 23.9 thousand get to school by public transportation means, and 15.1 thousand – by personal means of transport.
Thus, DGETS announces that changes to class schedules would also decrease time available for homework.
