Chisinau councilors to decide whether to allot money for Ghidighici barrage
The Chisinau councilors at Thursday's meeting are to decide whether to allocate money from the local budget for planning the repair works on the drainage of the barrage of Ghidighici Lake. Earlier, Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca said a sum of 250,000 lei is needed for the purpose.
The barrage is managed by Moldova's Water Agency. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, the Agency's director Ion Lupu reiterated that the government will allocate 3.5 million lei for carrying out repair works on the barrage. If the money is transferred, the works will stat in June and will be completed by autumn. Moldova's Water Agency cannot allocate money for repairs as its budget enables paying employees' salaries only, Ion Lupu said.
Dorin Chirtoaca's proposal to provide 250,000 lei for this project aroused contradictory reactions among the Chisinau councilors.
Unaffiliated councilor Mihail Severovan told Info-Prim Neo he will have a lot of questions when the given project is examined by the Council. “It is the owner that must take care of the barrage, not the Chisinau City Hall,” he said.
“We have a lot of problems to solve. It is not within the mayor's competence to propose such initiatives as the local budget is small and no measures are taken to increase the revenues,” said councilor Oleg Onishchenko.
The mayor's proposal was supported by the councilors of the Moldova Noastra Alliance (AMN) and the Liberal Party (PL). “ Moldova's Water Agency should deal with this problem, but if they do not have money the City Hall should help,” said Pavel Caba, the leader of the AMN faction in the Chisinau Council. Councilman Mihai Ceban, of the PL, considers that it is a good intention. “If the mayor sounded the alarm, we must finance the works on the barrage,” he said.
