The Chisinau Municipal Council voted to allocate 33 million lei to cover the costs of water supply and sewer works performed by the public utility Apa-Canal Chisinau (ACC) in 2020-2021.

Anatolie Lichii, acting ACC director, told the Council that the utility rehabilitated a total of seven kilometers of pipes in this period. Much of the piping that was replaced was installed in 1965-1985 and was two or even three times past its service life. Lichii added that the law requires the contracting municipality to foot the bill.

To overcome a dire situation related to pipe failures, in 2013 ACC had to take out loans and look for grants to finance an extensive Priority Investment Program, with burden of repayment being put on ACC.

ACC administers 2,000 kilometers of water supply pipes and 1200 kilometers of sewer pipes. Their depreciation status is over 70%. Based on the loan agreements, 120 kilometers of water supply pipes 7 kilometers of sewer pipes were rehabilitated.
