Chisinau City Hall will be restored to former design

The Chisinau City Hall will be restored and brought back to the initial design of Alexandru Bernardazzi. The works will be completed in 2017, when it will be marked the 200th anniversary of the foundation of the City Hall, Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca announced, saying the reconstruction of the City Hall is a new but a very important objective of the municipality, IPN reports.

Dorin Chirtoaca said that all the annexes constructed around in the Soviet period and until 2017 will be demolished and the building will be brought back to its former condition, as it was designed and constructed by architect Alexandru Bernardazzi, together with mayor Carl Schmitt 113 years ago.

The Chisinau City Hall in earlier times housed the City Duma and is an architectural and historical monument of national importance. At the end of the 19th century, Mayor K. Schmidt proposed erecting a new building for the City Duma in the place of the depot used by firefighters. The design was entrusted to the city’s architect Mitrofan Elladi, who was helped by Alexandru Bernardazzi. The building was constructed in eclectic style, based on the Italian Renaissance architecture.

The construction was finished in 1902. During World War II, the building was seriously damaged and was reconstructed in the postwar period by pictures.
