Chisinau City Hall suggests restoring chapel of Jewish Cemetery

The Chisinau City Hall proposed rehabilitating the chapel of the Jewish Cemetery situated in Buiucani district of the capital city. It was destroyed as a result of bombardments during World War II. The initiative was is aimed at commemorating the victims of the Holocaust and the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp in Auschwitz, Poland, IPN reports, quoting a communique of the City Hall.

“We have examples when chapels were restored in other cemeteries. If the Jewish community supports such a proposal, the chapel of the Jewish Cemetery could be reconstructed gradually,” said Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca.

The administration of Chisinau considers that both the central and local public authorities should become involved in the rehabilitation of this chapel. Also, international funds should be attracted, including with the participation of the Jewish community.

Founded in 1887, the Jewish Cemetery is one of the national historical and arts monuments.
