Chisinau City Hall expected to ban farmers’ markets

Agricultural producers may be unable to sell their goods at farmers’ markets in Chisinau, as until now. The local authorities believe the vendors sell on sidewalks outside the Central Market because they are allowed to trade there during farmers’ markets, Info-Prim Neo reports. The issue of unauthorized trade was discussed in the January 30 meeting of Chisinau City Hall officials. Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca said the street vendors must be persuaded to sell inside the market. “The fact that we allow the farmers to sell their products at the spring-summer-autumn farmers’ markets leads to unauthorized trade as the people consider they can sell outside the market all the time,” he stated. The head of Chisinau’s Centru district Vladimir Sarban said about 30 persons are now selling fruit and vegetables grown in Moldova outside the Central Market. Another approximately 50 sellers trade in citrus fruit, while 20-30 persons sell dairy products and meat. According to Sarban, there are enough places inside the market, but the vendors do not want to sell there, arguing the number of buyers is higher outside the market. The chief of the municipal police Silviu Musuc said that 120 reports were drawn up last week. There were imposed fines of 60,000 lei over the violation of trading rules.
