The Chisinau City Hall building, dated to 1901, and the B.P. Hasdeu Library on Stefan cel Mare Avenue are the first to be marked with tablets that show the buildings as architectural monuments of national importance. The slabs have been installed on Tuesday. Deputy Mayor Nistor Grozavu and journalists attended the event, Info-Prim neo reports. Municipality’s initiative is meant to raise people’s awareness about the need to keep cultural, historical and architectural heritage, says the vice mayor. Nistor Grozavu hopes this measure will stop illegal demolitions. Over the next three weeks, 24 tablets will be installed on the monuments of national importance, then on those of local significance. The first ones to be marked will be those on Stefan cel Mare, Banulescu-Bodoni, Pushkin and parallel or perpendicular streets. The tablet inscriptions will include the number in the Register of monuments of national importance, the name of the edifice and the date it was built. The tablets are made of plastic, with internal engraving and colors corresponding to those of the monument. Each one costs about 2,000 lei. There are more expensive tablets, of wood or stone, which cost around 10,000 lei. They will be installed only where building’s owners will help. There are about 250 architectural monuments of national importance and 700 of local significance in Chisinau’s historical center. The oldest one is Mazarache Church dated to the 18th century.
