Chisinau-based newspaper collects books for students and detainees

More than a thousand books were collected in “A Martisor for a Book” Campaign, organised by the Ziarul de Garda newspaper. The purpose of the event was to donate the books to the Rusca Penitentiary for Women and the Vulcanesti-based Luceafarul Lyceum. According to the organisers, the book-stocks of the libraries in the penitentiary and the school are old and lack new publications. Aneta Grosu, editor-in-chief of Ziarul de Garda, has told Info-Prim Neo that this year the campaign was more successful than in 2007 – people donated not just single books but entire collections. In recognition, the students of the Vulcanesti Lyceum crafted a martisor for each participant in the campaign, bearing the donor’s name. The detainees of the Rusca penitentiary have also offered two sets of crocheted martisors. The books will be soon donated to the beneficiaries. Last year, Ziarul de Garda organised a similar event for the Lipcani Penitentiary and the Tighina Romanian Language Boarding School.
