Chisinau Arena project is populist and electoral, opinion

The real problems faced by the Republic of Moldova make the Chisinau Arena project be regarded as purely populist and electoral in character, Liberal-Democratic MP Grigore Cobzac stated in the program “Black Box” on TV8 channel, IPN reports.

The MP said the legislative body allocated 102 million lei for this project. It was decided to give up redistributing the money from the Road Fund for the simple reason that there are not enough financial resources for the road repair project announced by the government. “It was decided to give up redirecting the 200 million lei from the Road Fund for the Chisinau Arena. They now found only 102 million lei and voted for allocating this,” said Grigore Cobzac.

He noted that the Chisinau Arena project generates a lot of questions. “The problems we face now make us qualify this project as purely populist and electoral in character,” said the Lib-Dem.

Socialist MP Grigore Novac said the costs mainly in the budgetary sphere are reduced, but money is allocated for such a big project as the Chisinau Arena. “I wonder if this is opportune now and if we have the capacity and financial resources needed to cope with such a financial challenge,” he stated. According to the MP, there are many questions related to the allotted plot and the project itself, but a sports complex in Chisinau is really needed.

Expert of the Institute for Development and Social Initiative “Viitorul” Veaceslav Ionita said that if the feasibility study for the Chisinau Arena wasn’t carried out as a result of a public tender contest, this is a problem related to the public bidding system.
