Chisinau apartment building residents protest disconnection of water services

The residents of a Chisinau apartment building on Voluntarilor St picketed on Monday the City Hall requesting the resumption of water supply that has been cut off for a week. The water utility Apa-Canal Chisinau (ACC) claims the building was disconnected from the water supply network for overdue bills totaling more than 2 million lei, Info-Prim Neo reports. “Of the 728 apartments in our building, only 53 didn't pay their bills, and they owe 270,000 lei. The rest of 2.3 million lei that we allegedly owe we don't know how to explain”, said Nina Caraus, the chairwoman of the dwellers' association. Maria, a resident of the building, said all the dwellers face hardships because of the disconnection, especially the families with small children. Many residents have to buy water for drinking and even for doing the laundry. “Those who gathered here today have always paid their bills. Where this debt comes from, we don't understand”, says the woman. The residents speculate that the claimed debt is the result of some kind of fraud. They also argue that the disconnection was unlawful since it wasn't based on a court decision. ACC director Constantin Becciev stated for his part that the residents should come together and request the dwellers' association to account for the payments made by the residents to cover recent bills, of over 200,000 lei, and for the historical debt of 2 million lei.
