The Chisinau International Airport will have a new landing strip as of May 2018, Avia Invest director general Petru Jardan and director of the Civil Aviation Authority Radu Bezniuc told a news conference. The building works were estimated at €15-16 million, IPN reports.
The works on the new runway already started. This will be 2,400 meters long and 45 meters wide. Petru Jardan said 1-2.2 meters of the current runway will be demolished to build a modern runway from zero.
Radu Bezniuc said flight security will be guaranteed at the highest level and there will be no need to close the airport. Now the airport is closed for 5-6 hours to enable works on the main runway. The works are mainly performed at night. The new runway is a competitive advantage of the airport as this will be able to work without interruptions.
In the same connection, Petru Jardan stated that over €57 million was invested in the airport so far. The investor contributed about 60% of the sum, while the rest was covered with the airport’s revenues. In the nearest future, Wizz-Air will operate a new flight: Chisinau – Berlin.
