Chisinau administration takes steps to get rid of street vendors

The vendors selling products on sidewalks near the Central Market in Chisinau Friday were urged by officials of the City Hall and the market’s administration to work legally at authorized stalls, Info-Prim Neo reports. “We prepared two types of information for the street vendors. We informed them that separate selling places are available on the market’s territory in the “Fruit” and “Root Vegetables” divisions. The tax for a place is 10 lei plus 3 lei for the sanitary examination. Those who sell citrus fruit are informed how they can do it legally,” said the director of the Central Market Ion Stratulat. The persons who want to sell citrus fruit legally must register the business and sign a lease contract for the selling place. They must also register the cash register at the Tax Inspectorate and have scales checked and approved by the National Metrology and Standardization Institute. The sellers must have a medical certificate and documents of origin for the goods. “The vendors prefer to sell on the street because the number of buyers there is larger. They lie when they say that the sanitary laboratory examines their merchandise as the lab takes samples only from authorized places. We are not entitled to punish them or confiscate their goods, but we ask them to sell at authorized stalls,” said Ion Stratulat. The street vendors say there are several vacant places in the market now that it is cold, but when it grows warmer the persons who sold there will return and will drive them away. The police continue to impose fine on the traders who break the law, but many of the fines are not paid. There are now 276 free selling places at the Central Market.
