Chisinau administration plans to buy new snowplows

The authorities of Chisinau municipality in 2011intend to purchase new equipment for removing snow from sidewalks and yards of apartment buildings. Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca instructed the divisions responsible for cleanup and the district heads’ offices to do the necessary calculations so as to see how much money is needed, Info-Prim Neo reports. “We inherited a soviet cleanup system. We must modernize it and make it functional,” said the mayor. Petru Gontea, the head of the Public Amenities Division, said about 10 million lei will be necessary to buy equipment for cleaning common places. These units of transport will be managed by the district heads’ offices and can help clean the yards of apartment buildings, at the dwellers’ request. They can also be used to remove snow from sidewalks and yards. The head of Centru district Vladimir Sarban said the number of workers involved in cleanup is too low. According to him, for the cleanup system to be functional, the number of workers should be increased by at least 270, but the municipal resources do not enable to do it. Estimates show 80 million lei is needed to purchase snowplows and cleanup equipment for every district head’s office and to remunerate the workers.
