Liberal Party vice president Dorin Chirtoaca has admitted that his party would like to have the country's top job. The statement was made during the “In PROfunzime” talk-show on Pro TV Chisinau, IPN reports.
Chirtoaca thinks the office will remain for PL after the pro-European parties with more seats than PL have chosen their offices. “We insist on the European practice. The Liberal Democrats, who won the most votes, will claim the office of Prime Minister, then we have the Democrats, who will aim for the seat of the Speaker, and finally we, who have the least seats, will have to do with what's left, the President's Office”, said Chirtoaca.
He also reiterated the Liberals' position regarding the amendment of the Constitution through referendum so that the head of state is elected with 51 votes in the Parliament instead of 61, and spoke against the direct election of the President by the people. “Considering the current situation in Moldova, the risk is high that a left-wing politician could be elected to lead the country into the Customs Union. The President must be backed politically by the Parliament. We have already had two heads of state without political support and we know the consequences”, argued Chirtoaca.
The Liberal said the pro-European parties didn't reach the stage of distributing offices. “So far, we're still looking for that key that can ensure the functioning of democratic coalitions not for four years, but for many years to come. As of now, we haven't discussed the distribution of portfolios. PLDM should come up with proposals because it has the most seats and PDM awaits these proposals and will say if it accepts them or not”, said Chirtoaca.
Former Liberal MP Ana Gutu stated during the same talk-show that such a referendum as proposed by PL would fail because “the people simply won't understand the question”.
