Chirtoaca accuses municipal official of undue influence in contesting election outcome

Re-elected Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca presented at the City Hall's meeting on Monday the copy of a petition signed by a number of staff members of the Municipal Social Assistance Division asking the Centru District Court to invalidate the results of the mayoral elections on June 19, with the argument that the lacking frontal curtain on the polling booths amounted to violation of the secret vote principle. According to Chirtoaca, it was the Division's head, Eugenia Ceban, who put pressure on the staffers to sign the petition and collect other signatures. Sergiu Cibotaru, the mayor of the suburban village of Tohatin, confirmed that last Monday and Tuesday, a social assistant from the Division came to the village administration and insisted that officials there sign the petition too. “If they have something to object to the results of the local elections, they are free to do it at the weekend, and certainly not by means of municipal agencies. Democracy doesn't mean anarchy. We will put an end to Mrs Ceban's abuses”, fumed Dorin Chirtoaca, adding that the case would be investigated. Eugenia Ceban didn't attend today's meeting at the City Hall due to an inspection at the Division, a staffer said. Eugenia Ceban, who is believed to be a supporter of the Communist Party, has been in conflict with Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca, who accused her repeadedly of different abuses and even fired her several times; each time she was reinstated to office by court order.
