The issue of election of the head of state by direct vote can be resolved in Parliament, Liberal-Democratic MP Chiril Lucinschi said in the talk show “Place for dialogue” on Radio Moldova station, IPN reports.
“We drafted the bill to amend the Constitution after those from the parliamentary coalition declared that they are ready to support the election of the head of state by the people. It’s known that about 70% of the population wants the President to be elected by direct vote. That’s why we consider that this problem can be solved in Parliament. There is no use spending money on the referendum, especially when the country is in a profound crisis,” stated Lucinschi.
The MP believes the early parliamentary elections will take place and it would be ideal for the parliamentary and presidential elections to be held simultaneously. “Calculations show the amendment that we put forward could be passed towards the end of July. Most probably, the early elections will be held next autumn. It would be good if these elections were held simultaneously so as to avoid extra costs,” he said.
Socialist MP Vasile Bolea stated that the Socialist parliamentary group will support the Lib-Dems’ bill, but will also sign for holding a referendum on the method of electing the head of state.
