Chiril Gaburici in Parliament: We do not have time to lose; it is a crisis situation

Prime Minister Chiril Gaburici, when being questioned in Parliament, said the situation in the financial-banking sector is a crisis one and must be immediately stabilized. No decision was yet made concerning the liquidation of the three banks - Banca de Economii, Banca Sociala and Unibank, IPN reports.

Chiril Gaburici noted that the Government intervened to reduce the pressure faced by the three banks. It provided guarantees to the National Bank of Moldova so that all the deposits in these banks could be covered and the population is not affected. They also discussed with representatives of countries that went through similar problems so as to find solutions. An internal inquiry was launched and the necessary information is collected to initiate all the procedures needed for those to blame to be held accountable and the money to be restored.

Reproached by Socialist MPs for the delay in identifying those to blame, Chiril Gaburici said the money had been stolen during several years and time is needed to discover the culprits.

Chiril Gaburici also said that a bill to create the Supervision Board of the National Bank is now being drafted. To avoid blockages related to the problems at the three banks, the Government took a series of measures, including formulated a bill to allow taking the payments related to deposits from the three banks. They will also suggest that the deposit guarantee should be increased from 7,000 lei to 30,000 lei.

In conclusion, the Prime Minister told the MPs that it is a crisis situation and measures should be taken in concert to remedy it.
