The children’s ombudswoman Maia Bănărescu proposes providing concessions to business entities that create jobs for children and inform them about the norms and standards on child labor. The proposal was incorporated in a notice that was submitted to Prime Minister Ion Chicu, IPN reports.

The ombudswoman suggests developing professional training programs for employees of labor inspection and surveillance institutions, centering on the realization of the children’s right to work.

Maia Bănărescu also suggests that the action plan of the National Council for Children’s Rights for 2020 should include, among others, the observance of the child’s right to be protected from economic exploitation, against involvement in any labor that entails risks or impede education, cause harm to health or the physical, mental, spiritual, moral or social development of children.

In a press release, the Ombudsperson’s Office says that a number of irregularities related to the implementation of the legislation regulating child labor were identified. The most serious of them is the lack of an efficient state mechanism for monitoring and supervising compliance with the international and national standards on the protection of children’s right to work. According to the ombudswoman, the responsible authorities carry out their tasks formally, declining responsibility and showing that the inspection legislation is imperfect.
