Children's ombudswoman advises prosecution in reported case of sex abuse in summer camp
The reported case of sexual abuse by a 10-year-old boy against two younger children, aged 7 and 8, at a summer camp several days ago could be true, said Children's Ombudswoman Tamara Plamadeala, following discussions with the victims' parents.
The ombudswoman said in a press release, quoted by Info-Prim Neo, she sent a request to the Office of the Orhei District Prosecutor, advising the initiation of proceedings against the persons responsible for what happened, in particular the administration of the camp.
Tamara Plamadeala believes that this case would have never happened had the educators in this recreation establishment ensured continuous and adequate surveillance of the children.
The 10-year-old boy who allegedly committed the sexual abuse cannot be held answerable because of his age, and neither can be his parents, because they had commended their child to the administration of the camp.
The ombudswoman says she will further recommend the Ministry of Education as well as the Ministry of Social Protection and Family to monitor and inspect more strictly the conditions in Moldova's summer camps to ensure that sexual exploitation and other forms of abuse against children are excluded.
