Children with mental disabilities move from boarding school to own house
Four children with severe mental disabilities of the Orhei boarding school moved to a new house in Mitoc village of Orhei district. It is a new social service called “Community House”, which was implemented within the Inclusive Community – Moldova Program, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“I cried when they took me from the boarding school, not because I did not want to leave, but because I left. I never ate with flowers on the table so far. It’s nice. We feel like in a real family here,” said Ion, one of the four boys who moved from the boarding school to the community house. Ion was abandoned by his family and lived at the Orhei boarding school for seven years.
The community house is outfitted with furniture and all the necessary stuff. It is a safe and comfortable place, with a family-like environment. The boys will be helped in their daily activities by six specialists who will work in shifts.
The social service “Community House” is an alterative to the residential service for persons with mental disabilities. The adults and children with mental disabilities, who need continuous protection, care and specialized support, are placed in a community environment, where the quality of life is much better and they have access to all the community services.
By the end of September, another four boys of the Orhei boarding school will be transferred to the community house in Voloave, Soroca.
The service was created by the Orhei District Council and the Social Assistance and Family Protection Division in partnership with Keystone Human Services International Moldova Association (KHSIMA), within the Inclusive Community – Moldova Program. The beneficiaries of the program have been 269 children and young persons who left the Orhei boarding school or run the risk of being taken to it.
