Children playing with matches blamed for most of fires
Children playing with matches have started the majority of fires lately, according to the Fire & Rescue Dept statistics.
Liliana Puscasu, spokesperson for the Department, has told Info-Prim Neo that children caused two fires on Thursday. The most serious one destroyed three truck-loads of hay, located in a household in Codreanca village, Straseni. Happily, the fire was contained before it spread to the house and farm buildings. Damages are estimated at 10,000 lei, not to mention the effort of the owner to gather and pack the hay.
Liliana Puscasu warns parents as well as grandparents to be increasingly watchful about what their children are doing during the summer vacation. Matches and lighters must be stored out of children's reach and sight, somewhere up high, especially if the children are of preschool age, when they look at lighters or matches as a source of amusement. In this context, noteworthy is the experience of an elderly couple, the grandparents of three, ages 4, 6, and 8. The oldest grandchild has already set fire to the bathroom twice, inspiring the younger ones to follow his example on a number of occasions which were less serious.
Puscasu also said it is very important not to leave the children unattended during nighttime, especially in blackout, because they may get scared and try to light a candle. This is how three children died this month.
Out of almost 1,000 fires recorded from the beginning of this year, 60 were started by children.
