The International Society for Human Rights - Moldavian Section (ISHR-MS) organized a visit with more than 70 people - children and those who accompany them - to the only in Moldova prison for women №7, Rusca, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to a communiqué from the Society, only on this day imprisoned mothers could show to their families what their life is like behind bars. To make this visit come true, the ISHR-MS staff has been gathering children from all over the country. While mothers are in prison, their children live in orphanages, with relatives or professional parents. However, due to the lack of money, they do not have opportunities to visit their mothers. Many of them do not see each other for years.
The three-year old Sandu decided that the first thing he will tell his mother is how much he loves her. “Children miss a lot their mothers. Sandu memorized a poem especially for this meeting to tell his mom,” said Elena, a social assistant from children’s home.
“When we came to prison for the first time 13 years ago, everything was different,” said Liubov Nemchinova, chairman of the ISHR-MS and the project coordinator. “We are also the first organization that has started working in prisons, and the only one that continues to work there for so many years.
If 10 years ago someone would have told me that there will be held open days in jails, I would not believe it. A lot has changed. This is partially our contribution, partially of the other organizations. However our society has also developed in a democratic way a lot.“
This visit was organized in the framework of the project “Strengthening Moldova civil society organizations in HIV/AIDS prevention and care for women and juvenile prisoners” funded by the European Union.
