Child who fell under ice on lake in Chisinau remains in intensive care

The boy aged 12 who fell under ice on a lake in Botanica district of Chisinau continues to be in intensive care. His state of health improved and in several days he will be transferred to the specialized section of the Mother and Child Institute. The rescuers who saved him went to visit him, but could talk to his mother only.

Asked by IPN to provide details, press officer of the Mother and Child Institute Maxim Cazacu said the boy was brought in a very serious state, with hypothermia. He is now conscious, but cannot remember what happened.  He will undergo a number of medical examinations.

The General Division of Education, Youth and Sport said that three students went to walk around the lake after the sixth class, at 1:35pm, with the parents’ permission. A child called the 112 service and said that his friend stepped onto the ice on the lake and fell under it.

Firefighter Nicolae Cărăuș, of the Botanica Rescue and Firefighting Department, who took the child out of the water, said any intervention is huge responsibility, not mentioning the cases when children are involved. It was a difficult operation given that the temperatures are low and there was ice on the lake. “We were glad to learn today from doctors and from his mother that he feels fine. I urge all the parents to explain the danger faced when walking on ice to the children and not to leave them unsupervised,” he told IPN.
